Shopify & ChatGPT
Getting your Shopify products discovered by ChatGPT
You cannot make ChatGPT recommend your store. You can make your store easy for OpenAI's crawlers to read and for the model to quote accurately. This page is about the difference.
Short answer
To improve how ChatGPT discovers your Shopify products, allow OpenAI's crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User) in robots.txt, and give each product complete, well-structured information the model can quote: description, attributes, FAQ, comparisons, use cases and accurate policies. You cannot control OpenAI's ranking or its final recommendations.
What can a merchant control?
- Crawler access. Do not block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or ChatGPT-User in robots.txt unless you mean to.
- Product information. Explicit specs and attributes, not marketing adjectives.
- Structure. Short direct answers, FAQs, comparison tables, structured data.
- Contextual content. Use cases and buyer guidance that connect a product to a situation.
- Machine-readable files. A clean llms.txt summary of your catalog.
- Internal linking. So a crawler that lands on one page can reach the rest.
What can a merchant not control?
- OpenAI's model behaviour and how it ranks candidates.
- Which sources it cites, and whether it cites anyone.
- Its retrieval and re-ranking systems, which are proprietary.
- Whether a given feature (for example ChatGPT shopping) is available in a region or to a user.
How OtoRank helps with ChatGPT discovery
OtoRank scores each product for the controllable factors above, generates the missing content for your approval, keeps llms.txt current, and reports GPTBot visits by name so you can see whether OpenAI is crawling you at all. It makes no claim about OpenAI's recommendations. See how it works.
Important limitations
- OtoRank cannot guarantee ChatGPT will mention, cite or recommend your products.
- OpenAI does not publish how sources are selected, and it changes.
- A GPTBot visit proves crawling, not citation or referral.
- llms.txt is not confirmed as a ChatGPT ranking input.
- Third-party signals (reviews, reputable roundups) influence recommendations and sit outside OtoRank.
Frequently asked questions
Can OtoRank get my products recommended by ChatGPT?
No tool can promise that. ChatGPT's recommendations come from OpenAI's models and retrieval systems, which weigh many signals a merchant cannot set. OtoRank improves the parts you can influence: crawlability, product information, structure and machine-readable files.
Which crawler does ChatGPT use on my store?
OpenAI operates GPTBot (broad crawling), OAI-SearchBot (search features) and ChatGPT-User (fetches triggered by a user prompt). Allowing them in robots.txt is what makes your store eligible to be read. OtoRank shows GPTBot visits by name in its crawler analytics.
Does ChatGPT read llms.txt?
OpenAI has not committed to llms.txt as a ranking input, and behaviour can change. Treat llms.txt as one clean, low-cost discovery signal among several, not a guarantee of inclusion.
What actually helps with ChatGPT shopping?
Complete, well-structured product pages an assistant can quote from: a clear description, explicit attributes, a real FAQ, comparisons and use cases, plus accurate policies. Third-party presence (reviews, reputable roundups) matters too and is outside any single app.
