Shopify & Perplexity
Getting your Shopify products cited by Perplexity
Perplexity shows a source list with every answer. That makes citations visible and worth targeting, within limits. You control what Perplexity can read and quote, not whether it picks you.
Short answer
To improve how Perplexity discovers and cites your Shopify products, allow PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User in robots.txt, and publish concise, factual, well-structured product content: direct descriptions, explicit attributes, FAQ answers and comparisons that are easy to quote. Perplexity's source selection is its own; you cannot set it.
How Perplexity selects sources
Perplexity retrieves pages relevant to a question, ranks them with its own system, and cites the ones it drew from. In practice it favours pages that are authoritative, clearly structured, reasonably current, and easy to extract short factual passages from. Because it always cites, being quotable is the whole game.
What a merchant can control
- Crawler access for PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User.
- Quotable passages: one clear sentence per fact, not a paragraph of adjectives.
- FAQs phrased the way shoppers ask questions.
- Comparison content for "X vs Y" and "best for [use case]" questions.
- Freshness: keep specs, pricing context and availability current.
- A clean llms.txt summary of the catalog.
What a merchant cannot control
- Perplexity's retrieval and ranking systems.
- Which sources it cites for a given question, or whether yours is among them.
- How it summarises or frames your product.
How OtoRank helps
OtoRank scores products for the controllable factors, generates concise description, FAQ, comparison, buyer-guide and use-cases content for approval, maintains llms.txt, and reports PerplexityBot visits by name. It makes no promise about citations. See how it works.
Important limitations
- OtoRank cannot guarantee Perplexity will cite your store.
- Perplexity's ranking is proprietary and changes.
- A PerplexityBot visit is not a citation, and a citation is not a sale.
- Being cited for a question does not mean being recommended in the answer.
- llms.txt is a supporting signal, not a confirmed ranking input.
Frequently asked questions
Can OtoRank get my store cited by Perplexity?
No tool can guarantee a citation. Perplexity chooses sources with its own retrieval and ranking. OtoRank improves the inputs: crawlability for PerplexityBot, useful product context, structured content and comparisons that are easy to quote.
Which crawler does Perplexity use?
PerplexityBot for indexing and Perplexity-User for fetches triggered by a user question. Allow both in robots.txt if you want to be eligible. OtoRank reports PerplexityBot visits by name.
Does Perplexity favour recent content?
Perplexity tends to favour authoritative, well-structured and reasonably fresh pages, and it always shows sources. Keeping product information current and clearly dated where relevant is worth doing.
What content does Perplexity quote from a store?
Concise factual passages: a direct product description, explicit attributes, FAQ answers and comparison points. Vague marketing copy is rarely quoted.
